What Too Clever answers have in common

Krillion doesn’t explain why it marks an answer Too Clever, but the examples so far fall into two groups.

• Answers lifted from the prompt. Naming Iran or Iraq for a prompt about countries that border Iraq or Iran is technically right, and the game’s own note calls it “borrowed straight from the question.” If the answer is already in the prompt, expect Too Clever.
• The famous “obscure” pick. Some answers are well known precisely for being the unexpected one, so lots of players reach for them while thinking they’re being original. That is the exact situation the game’s Too Clever line describes.

How to avoid a Too Clever answer

• Don’t reuse words from the prompt. Anything named in the question is the easiest Too Clever trap to spot.
• Be wary of the first “clever” idea. If an answer feels like a trick everyone knows, it probably is. One step further usually pays: a Rare answer scores 60, four times a Too Clever.
• Don’t panic about it either. With only 5 Too Clever answers in 392,359, you are far more likely to land in Plankton or Schooler than in Too Clever. A Too Clever answer still scores, and it still beats a miss, which scores 0.
